Z-Fold Hand Towels vs C-Fold and Roll Towels Compared

Washroom paper is a system. Whatever the unit on the wall takes is what you buy, so choose the dispenser first.

Z-fold hand towels are interfolded paper towels that present the next towel as you pull one out, so staff and customers take one at a time. That makes them hygienic and low waste, which is why they are the standard in busy washrooms. C-fold towels are the older stacked format, and roll towels feed through autocut dispensers.

What is the difference between Z-fold, C-fold and roll hand towels?

The difference is how the paper is folded and how it leaves the dispenser. Z-fold towels interlock in a zig-zag, so pulling one presents the next. C-fold towels are folded into a C shape and simply stacked. Roll towels come as a continuous roll that an autocut dispenser cuts to length.

All three are paper hand towels doing the same job. What changes is the dispensing action, and that is what decides how much paper your washroom gets through and how tidy it stays. Every format needs its own dispenser, so the three are not interchangeable once a dispenser is on the wall.

Why are Z-fold hand towels the usual choice?

Z-fold towels win on hygiene and waste. Because the towels interfold, the next one is already presented when the last is taken, so nobody has to reach into the stack. Users take one, use it, and bin it. Less paper on the floor, fewer refills wasted, and a tidier washroom for the same spend.

The single-towel action matters more than it sounds. When people can grab a handful, they do, and your paper cost climbs while the bin overflows. Z-fold makes the tidy behaviour the easy behaviour. It also keeps hands off the remaining stock, which is the point of any dispenser in a shared washroom.

Z-fold is also sold as interfold, and some suppliers use V-fold for the same shelf. They all describe the same idea, paper folded so one pull gives one towel, but the naming is loose from one brand to the next. Check the towel size and the dispenser it is listed for rather than trusting the name. The pillar guide to washroom and janitorial supplies covers where hand towels sit alongside the rest of your stock.

When should you use C-fold or roll towels instead?

Use C-fold when you already have C-fold dispensers fitted and they work fine, or in quieter washrooms where waste is not an issue. Use roll towels when traffic is heavy and you want fewer refills, because one roll holds far more paper than a pack of folded towels and lasts longer between changes.

Roll towels are the workhorse for places like busy canteens, schools and factory washrooms. The autocut dispenser feeds a set length, cuts it, and presents the next tail. Staff top up less often, which is the real saving once labour is counted. The trade-off is that the dispensers cost more and need to be loaded correctly.

  • Small office or staff WC: Z-fold, or C-fold if that is already fitted.
  • Shop or cafe washroom: Z-fold, refilled on a weekly check.
  • Busy public or industrial washroom: roll towels in an autocut dispenser.
  • Kitchen and prep areas: centre-feed rather than hand towels.

Centre-feed is for wiping and spills, not for drying hands. Keep it separate from your hand towel stock.

Do not use centre-feed as a hand towel. It pulls from the middle of the roll and is sized for wiping surfaces. The difference is set out in centre-feed vs blue roll vs kitchen roll.

How many plies do hand towels need?

One ply is fine for light use and lowest cost. Two ply feels better, absorbs more and usually means people take fewer towels, which can even out the price per hand dried. For customer-facing washrooms, two ply is the safer choice. For staff areas and high volume sites, one ply does the job.

Judge a towel by how many it takes to dry a pair of hands, not by the price of the case. A thin towel that people double up on is not cheaper. Ask for a sample before switching a whole site, and try it in the busiest washroom you have.

Colour is the other choice. White reads as clean and suits front-of-house. Natural or green towels are usually the recycled option and cost less, which suits back-of-house and industrial sites.

Why do businesses run out of hand towels when the store room is full?

Nearly always because the dispensers are mixed. A site fitted with Z-fold in one washroom and C-fold in another needs two separate paper lines, and the spare case in the store room is usually the wrong one. Standardising on a single towel format across every washroom fixes it in a way that ordering more paper never will.

It shows up as a specific complaint: plenty of stock on the shelf, but an empty dispenser on the wall. Two formats, two part-used cases, and the one that fits ran out first. Fit the same unit everywhere and any member of staff can restock any washroom from any box on the shelf.

Old or broken dispensers are the cheapest moment to fix this. When a unit needs replacing anyway, replace it with whatever format the rest of the site uses rather than matching the one that broke. Two or three swaps and the whole site is on one line, which also buys better case pricing. For the reordering routine itself, the counting and par-level method is set out in the toilet roll guide below and works the same for towels.

Order hand towels with the rest of your washroom stock. Commercial toilet rolls and bin liners and refuse sacks run down at the same rate, so one order covers the lot. Autocut users can go straight to hand towel auto rolls.

Frequently asked questions

What are Z-fold hand towels?

Z-fold hand towels are paper towels folded in a zig-zag so they interlock in the dispenser. Pulling one out presents the next, so users take a single towel each time. That makes them hygienic and low waste, which is why Z-fold is the usual choice for busy commercial washrooms. They need a Z-fold or interfold dispenser.

What is the difference between Z-fold and C-fold towels?

Both are folded paper hand towels, but they stack differently. Z-fold towels interfold so pulling one presents the next, dispensing singly and hygienically from a Z-fold dispenser. C-fold towels are folded into a C shape and stacked, a traditional option that can dispense several at once. Z-fold generally wastes less and suits busier washrooms.

Are Z-fold and interfold towels the same thing?

In practice, yes. Z-fold, interfold and V-fold all describe paper folded so each towel interlocks with the one behind it, and one pull gives one towel. Suppliers apply the three names loosely and inconsistently, so when you reorder, check the towel size and the dispenser the pack is listed for rather than going by the name on the box.

Which hand towel is best for a busy washroom?

For most busy commercial washrooms, Z-fold towels in a wall dispenser are the practical choice, because they dispense one at a time and keep waste down. For very high traffic sites, autocut roll towels hold more paper per refill, so staff top up less often. Match the towel to the dispenser you fit.

Can you use centre-feed roll as a hand towel?

It is better not to. Centre-feed rolls are wiping paper for counters, kitchens and spills, pulled from the middle of the roll and sized for surfaces rather than hands. Use proper hand towels in a hand towel dispenser for washrooms, and keep centre-feed for cleaning tasks.

Should you buy one ply or two ply hand towels?

One ply is fine for staff areas and high volume sites where cost matters most. Two ply is more absorbent and feels better, so people often take fewer towels, which can even out the cost per use. For customer-facing washrooms, two ply is the safer choice. Test a sample in your busiest washroom before switching.
