Small vs Large Bubble Wrap: Which Protects Best?

Packaging guides · Updated 27 July 2026 · 6 min read

Small bubble is about 10mm across. Large bubble runs around 25 to 32mm.

Small bubble wrap has air pockets around 10mm across and wraps items directly, protecting surfaces from scratches and light knocks. Large bubble wrap uses pockets around 25 to 32mm and fills the space around an item inside a box, absorbing heavier impacts. Neither is better on its own. Most businesses keep a roll of each.

What is the difference between small and large bubble wrap?

The difference is the size of the air pockets. Small bubble wrap has bubbles around 10mm across, so the sheet is thin and folds closely around an item. Large bubble wrap has bubbles around 25 to 32mm, so the sheet is much thicker and holds items away from the walls of a box.

Both are made from the same material, low-density polyethylene, and both work the same way. The trapped air spreads the force of a knock instead of letting it reach your goods. What changes is how that air is arranged. Lots of small pockets give you a fine, even cushion. Fewer big pockets give you depth.

That one difference decides the job each roll is good at. Small bubble hugs the shape of the item. Large bubble takes up room.

Which bubble wrap protects best?

Large bubble absorbs a bigger single impact because it holds more air and more depth. Small bubble protects the surface of an item better because it sits flat against it with no gaps. The best protection comes from both, small bubble wrapped around the item and large bubble packed around that.

Think of it as two separate risks. The first is the item rubbing, pressing or scraping inside its packaging. Small bubble solves that, because it covers every part of the surface evenly. The second risk is the parcel being dropped, stacked on or thrown into a van. Large bubble solves that, because the deeper air pockets have further to compress before anything hard reaches your goods.

Using a thick wad of small bubble instead of large bubble does work, but it takes far more material and more time per parcel. Using large bubble alone against a delicate surface leaves gaps between the bubbles where the item can still rub against the box.

When should you use small bubble wrap?

Use small bubble wrap any time the wrap touches the item. It suits glassware, mugs, plates, ceramics, framed prints, jewellery, cosmetics and electronics. It folds around handles, corners and stems without bunching, and it gives a neat parcel that customers can unwrap easily.

Small bubble is also the sensible choice when your parcels are small and your postage is priced by size. A thin, close wrap keeps the finished parcel down a size band. Some examples where small bubble does the job on its own:

  • Single mugs or glasses going into a snug box with little space left over.
  • Flat items like prints, tiles and phone cases, where the risk is scratching, not crushing.
  • Interleaving, where a sheet goes between two stacked items to keep them apart.
  • Small electricals, where you would use an anti-static grade rather than the clear one.

Wrap with the bubbles facing inward, against the item. The bubble wrap buying guide shows why, and covers the anti-static, self-cling and recycled grades.

When should you use large bubble wrap?

Use large bubble wrap when there is space to fill or weight to cushion. It suits void fill inside part-empty boxes, bulky but light goods, appliances, furniture parts and anything travelling on a pallet. One layer covers far more space than small bubble, so it is quicker and cheaper for big jobs.

Empty space is what damages parcels. If contents can move inside a box, they build up speed and hit the walls. Large bubble packs that space out and holds everything still. It is also the cheaper way to protect large surfaces, because you cover more area per metre of roll.

Large bubble is the wrong choice for anything with a polished or scratch-sensitive surface on its own, because the sheet only touches the item where the bubbles sit. Put a layer of small bubble under it, or use a foam-backed grade.

Can you use small and large bubble wrap together?

Yes, and it is the standard way to pack a fragile order. Wrap the item in small bubble with the bubbles facing in, place it in a box with space on every side, then pack large bubble around it until nothing moves when you shake the box. Tape the box closed and label it fragile.

Running both rolls is not double the cost. You use less of each, because neither one is doing a job it is bad at. A shop that packs a mix of small and large orders usually keeps a 300mm or 500mm small-bubble roll on the bench for wrapping, and a wider large-bubble roll nearby for filling boxes.

Work out how many metres each roll gives you before you order in bubble wrap roll sizes and how much you actually need. If you are cutting plastic, paper void fill can replace the large-bubble layer. Compare the options in eco alternatives to bubble wrap.

Which bubble size should you buy for your business?

Buy small bubble if you post fragile items that fit snugly in their boxes. Buy large bubble if your boxes have gaps to fill or your goods are bulky. If you post a mix, buy both. A 500mm small-bubble roll plus a wider large-bubble roll covers most Irish retail and online orders.

A quick way to decide is to look at your last ten parcels. If most of them were tightly packed with the item touching the wrap, small bubble is your main roll. If most of them rattled with space around the goods, large bubble is. Once you know which bubble size is your workhorse, our roll sizes guide sets out the width and length to order it in.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between small and large bubble wrap?

The difference is the size of the air pockets. Small bubble wrap has bubbles around 10mm across, so it folds closely around an item and protects the surface. Large bubble wrap has bubbles around 25 to 32mm, so it is thicker and fills the space around an item inside a box.

Which bubble wrap protects best, small or large?

Large bubble absorbs a bigger single impact because it holds more air and more depth. Small bubble protects surfaces better because it sits flat against the item with no gaps. The strongest protection uses both, small bubble around the item and large bubble packed around that.

When should I use large bubble wrap?

Use large bubble wrap when there is space to fill or weight to cushion. It suits void fill in part-empty boxes, bulky but light goods, appliances, furniture parts and pallet loads. One layer covers far more space than small bubble, so it is quicker and cheaper on big items.

Can I use small and large bubble wrap together?

Yes, and it is the normal way to pack a fragile order. Wrap the item in small bubble with the bubbles facing in, put it in a box with space on every side, then pack large bubble around it until nothing moves when you shake the box.

Does small bubble wrap come in the same roll widths as large?

Yes. Both bubble sizes are sold on rolls from 300mm wide up to 1500mm, in standard 50m and 100m lengths. Pick the width to match your most common parcel, and buy the longer roll for the size you get through fastest.

Which bubble wrap should a small online shop buy first?

Start with a 500mm small-bubble roll if your items fit snugly in their boxes, since that covers wrapping and interleaving. Add a wider large-bubble roll once you find yourself filling gaps with paper or posting bulkier goods that rattle inside the box.
