Specialist rolls go well beyond the standard white receipt, coloured thermal (shown), tachograph, taxi, laundry, carbonless and more.

Most tills run on standard white thermal rolls, but plenty of jobs need a specialist roll. The main ones are tachograph rolls for commercial vehicles (which drivers are required to carry), taxi receipt rolls, laundry tag rolls for dry cleaners, coloured thermal for branding and sorting, carbonless 2-ply and 3-ply rolls for instant copies, waiter order pads, and wide-format rolls for larger printers. Each is matched to a specific machine or rule, so the trick is knowing which job you are solving.

What counts as a specialist till roll?

A specialist roll is any receipt or printer roll designed for a particular task rather than a general-purpose till. Some are defined by a legal requirement (tachograph rolls), some by the machine they feed (taxi meters, garment taggers), and some by what they do (coloured rolls for sorting, carbonless rolls for copies). They are not exotic or hard to get, they are simply the right tool for a specific job, and ordering the correct one first time saves a lot of bother. The sections below cover each in turn.

Tachograph rolls

Tachograph rolls are the small thermal rolls used by the digital tachograph fitted in HGVs, coaches and other in-scope commercial vehicles. They must be type-approved for the tachograph, and a driver has to be able to produce a printout when asked, so carrying enough paper is a legal necessity, not an optional extra. They are usually 57mm wide and sold in packs of several rolls.

Because the printout is a legal record, use only approved tachograph rolls and keep spares in the cab. How many you should carry, and what the rules actually say, is covered in tachograph rolls: how many spare rolls must a driver carry.

Taxi receipt rolls

Taxi receipt rolls are compact thermal rolls for the meter and receipt printers fitted in cabs, most commonly 57mm wide. The diameter depends on the printer, with 57 x 30mm and 57 x 40mm the usual choices. As with any thermal roll, match the width to the printer first, then pick a length that means fewer changes during a busy shift.

Printer fit and the common sizes for Irish cabs are in taxi receipt rolls: sizes and printer compatibility. If you are not sure of the width, our till roll compatibility guide walks through measuring a roll.

Laundry and dry-cleaning tag rolls

Laundry tag rolls are narrow rolls of tags that a dry cleaner or launderer attaches to each garment, so every item stays matched to the right customer and order from drop-off through cleaning to collection. They come in set tag sizes to suit garment-tagging printers, and are a specialist format sized to the machine rather than a standard receipt roll.

Sizes and uses for dry cleaners are set out in laundry tag rolls: sizes and uses for dry cleaners.

Coloured thermal rolls

Yes, you can get coloured thermal paper. It comes in blue, green, pink and yellow, and prints exactly like white thermal, with heat and no ink, so the text still appears black. The colour is in the paper itself. Businesses use coloured rolls for branding, or to tell order types, departments or stations apart at a glance.

Carbonless and multi-ply rolls

Carbonless rolls make an instant copy without any carbon paper. A 2-ply roll has two layers, a white top and one coloured copy, giving the original plus a duplicate; a 3-ply roll adds a third layer for two copies. The back of each sheet carries a micro-coating that transfers the image under pressure, so the copy appears as the original is printed or written.

These are common in kitchens, on order pads and for delivery dockets. How carbonless paper works, and when to choose 2-ply over 3-ply, is in what is carbonless paper: 2-ply and 3-ply rolls explained. Shop the rolls on kitchen printer rolls.

Restaurant and waiter order pads

Not every copy is printed. Hand-written waiter pads come as single, duplicate (2-part) or triplicate (3-part) carbonless pads: the waiter writes the order once and each layer carries a copy, one for the kitchen, one for the bar, one for the till. They are usually numbered for tracking, and remain a fast, power-free way to take orders. Single, duplicate and triplicate options are explained in restaurant and waiter pads: single, duplicate and triplicate order pads.

Wide-format till rolls

Wide-format rolls are simply rolls wider than the standard 80mm, used by certain ticketing, weighing, labelling and kitchen printers that need a broader paper. If your printer takes 76mm or more, or anything that will not feed an 80mm roll, you likely need a wide-format option. Always confirm the exact width your machine expects before ordering.

When you need one, and the common widths, are covered in wide-format till rolls: when you need a 76mm+ roll.

Frequently asked questions

What are specialist till rolls?

Specialist till rolls are receipt and printer rolls made for a specific job rather than a standard till. They include tachograph rolls for commercial vehicles, taxi meter rolls, laundry tag rolls, coloured thermal for branding, carbonless 2-ply and 3-ply rolls for instant copies, waiter order pads and wide-format rolls. Each is matched to a particular machine or rule.

How many tachograph rolls must a driver carry?

A driver must be able to produce a tachograph printout when an officer asks, so you must carry enough approved paper to do so. In practice that means keeping at least one spare roll in the vehicle, and many operators carry two or three. Use only type-approved digital tachograph rolls, usually 57mm wide.

Can you get coloured thermal paper?

Yes. Coloured thermal paper exists in blue, green, pink and yellow, and prints exactly like white thermal, with heat and no ink. The colour is in the paper, not the print, so the text still comes out black. Businesses use it for branding, or to tell order types or stations apart at a glance.

What is the difference between 2-ply and 3-ply rolls?

Both are carbonless (no-carbon-required) rolls that make instant copies without carbon paper. A 2-ply roll has two layers, a white top and one coloured copy, giving the original plus one duplicate. A 3-ply roll adds a third layer for two copies. More plies means more copies, used for kitchen dockets, orders and delivery notes.

What size are taxi receipt rolls?

Taxi receipt rolls are small thermal rolls, most commonly 57mm wide, to suit the compact meter and receipt printers fitted in cabs. The exact diameter depends on the printer, but 57 x 30mm and 57 x 40mm are typical. Check your meter's printer, then match the width first and the length to how often you reprint.

Do dry cleaners use special tag rolls?

Yes. Dry cleaners and launderers use laundry tag rolls, narrow rolls of tags that attach to each garment so items stay matched to the right customer through cleaning. They come in set tag sizes to fit garment-tagging printers. It is a specialist format rather than a standard receipt roll, sized to the tagging machine.
